Your Questions Answered & A New Project We Love
about 4 years ago – Wed, Feb 05, 2020 at 07:16:21 PM

Hey Bilby Backers,

We wanted to give you an 'up close and personal' look at the Bilby Headlamp, and provide a thorough run-through of the different lighting modes.

So meet Colin, Knog's resident American and all-round office favourite, who will take you through the following:

  • Why silicone?
  • How is the light pod popped in & out of the silicone strap?
  • How is the light pod charged?
  • What's the charge time & run time?
  • What are the light modes?
  • What is Modemaker?

Your Questions, Answered.

Note, the light appears to flash at one point in the video - rest assured this is an effect of filming. The Bilby doesn't flash, unless you program it to of course, using our Modemaker app.

The field testing results are in!
about 4 years ago – Mon, Feb 03, 2020 at 01:00:18 PM

Field testing!

The Bilby team met on Friday to evaluate all the feedback received from our 80 field testers.
Each field tester was provided with a pre-production Bilby, sporting prototype optics and an early version of the firmware.

I can happily say that the results we received back - were overwhelmingly positive! We also received some really constructive ideas for some small improvement we could make - So we intend to incorporate the majority of these comments into the production Bilby's.

We'd like to publicly really thank all our field tester for their attention to detail and all the hours they put in using and reviewing the first of our new babies!

We thought you might be interested to read some of their feedback;

  • Straight out of the box the feeling was very sturdy and solid. Some high grade material feel and look to it.
  • Boost was used during cycling in the woods at night. Because of the speed of bicycle i need to know what is coming, so the boost option gave me extra reach for the light beam
  • Features I liked most about the headlamp Boost, Tilt, Lock, USB
  • I like the headband adjustment. Simple & effective
  • The weight of the product lends itself to having a feel of good build quality, without compromising wearer comfort
  • I found the Bilby super stable on my head with zero movement, the silicone almost has the effect of sticking like glue to my head. I took it off a few times mid run and it seems to just go neatly back into place when you put it back on, no adjustment required.
  • With the headlamp on Boost, I was impressed with the amount of light, the spread and the distance down the trail. More than adequate for my failing eyes running on tricky technical single trail.
  • The silicone casing and band are fantastic, much preferred over traditional elastic straps. The east of washing and cleaning etc as well as the ease of charging
  • Enjoyed the units simple design, intuitive adjustment strap and silicone material felt robust enough.
  • Using spotlight and max brightness allowed me to see perfectly during night walks through unlit parks. I could easily spot birds and bats up in the trees at 3-5m height. This was a fun way of spotting night life.
  • I used boost when I wanted to see further in dark parks and it did add a significant boost in distance.
  • I loved it, felt like driving with high beams on!
  • Buttons felt good and provided tactile feedback.
  • The unit felt of premium quality with metal body and well moulded silicone strap
  • Set and forget. No issue with slippage or loosening, very good.
  • Options such as boost and tilt make it very functional and considerate. Silicone strap was thin enough to allow my head to keep cool, does not absorb sweat.
  • Strap length is sufficient for XXXL hat size.
  • The battery life is good and charge time good also
  • The battery life indicator system is excellent!!!!
  • Overall I was super impressed with this light system.  It can suit so many users & uses.
  • I tried both boosts and was really impressed with the big difference in light. I settled on boost 1 for a large part of one of my runs when I was in rockier, scrubbier terrain. Boost 2 was really bright but I did not need it that bright.
  • It’s a great head torch love the look of it and the perception of value looking at it.
  • I do various sports from fishing, hiking, biking and camping, so the more modes the better - I love this about this headlight.
  • First impressions are pretty positive. Did a very technical ascent and less techy descent.
  • Love the distribution of light, I didn't have the depth perception issues I've had with other head torches
  • The smooth design meant it didn’t get caught getting out of my pocket or pack. No other light i have used can do this.

And some of their concerns  / suggestions for changes.

  1. Is Motion detect switch on a possibility?
  2.  I was unsure about the buttons- Once I got used to the settings and what they did the buttons were fine.
  3. Maybe an extra button for controls??
  4. Im not sure about the foam pad.

So to quickly address these suggestions above;

  1. Motion detect could be possible - but we felt that the extra costs to include this feature is probably not appropriate for this product.
  2. Having 4 LEDS with various optics and angles and intensities - being controlled by only 2 buttons was always going to be challenging. We have updated the firmware since the field testers feedback, so that the UI is as simple as it can be- in addition, (the good news) is that you can program your own functions with the Mode Maker App and make it as simple of feature rich as you like...
  3. The Foam pad that rests on your forehead has been modified to make it even softer, while insulating the unit from your head.

At Knog, we've been involved in product development for the last 17 years,  That experience has led us to believe that field testing is one of the most important stages in Product testing- as it allows you to find those final elusive bugs and iron out the unseen problems before going into production. ...So now for the really good news.... As a result of all the fabulous feed back we've received, we have made a call to press the button on production as soon as our factories are ready to start.

Oh ..and please don't forget to keep spreading the word; everyone needs a Bilby!!

Love from - Team KNOG.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We're up and away!
